In 2019, Fika (B2P) signed an agreement with the Government of Rwanda to build several hundred trail bridges from 2020 – 2025, signaling the launch of Fika’s 2020 – 2025 strategy, launching our scale program in East Africa, and providing an unprecedented opportunity to study the impact of rural trail bridges at scale.
A first of its kind randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigated the effects of trail bridges across 10,000 households across 97 bridge sites between 2020 and 2024. Final results are expected soon, and preliminary analyses indicate that new trail bridges:
At an average cost of $100k, with little maintenance required over decades of useful life, rural bridges create a safe and reliable connection to critical destinations at a fraction of the cost of traditional transportation investments (rural road improvements range from $1M – $5M a kilometer).
